These statistics provide information across the three main social work services areas. Information for all 32 Scottish Local Authorities is provided. In addition, there is the option to compare a Local Authority with up to five other comparable authorities and against Scotland as a whole.

The 'Notes' give information on data. This includes factors for local authority differences and information on local authorities that were unable to provide data for 2003 to 2006.
Please be aware that staff numbers may fluctuate over time as a result of various factors, including changes in the way that services are provided and changes in the number of vacancies.
Also, staffing levels may vary between councils as a results of differences in the way services are provided.
In addition, due to changes in methodolody or data included, data may not be comparable with previous years.
Consequently, this information should be treated with caution.
- Staff per 1,000 population are based on GROS mid-year population estimates.
- Staff numbers may fluctuate over time as a result of various factors, including changes in the way services are provided and changes in the numbers of vacancies.
- Staffing levels may vary between councils as a result of differences in the way services are provided.
- Factors which may have an influence on staffing numbers include contracting out or commissioning of services and partnership arrangements with neighbouring councils.
- From 2003 homeless and childrens' fieldwork services in Glasgow have been included.
- In 2004, data for Falkirk was not provided. 2003 figures for Falkirk have been used in the Scotland totals.
- WTE information has been estimated for 779 part-time posts in 2004.
- From 2005 Dumfries & Galloway have included information on home care staff.
- In the October 2006 census, there was a change in methodology to eliminate the double counting of staff covering for absent staff. Therefore, 2006 figures are not comparable with previous years.
- In 2006, children and families data for City of Edinburgh was not provided. The 2005 data for children and families has been used.
- In 2007, Glasgow provided figures for home care staff for the first time. Therefore, totals for 2007 are not comparable with previous years. The WTE for 2007 excluding Glasgow's home care is 41,850 and the number of staff per 1,000 population in Scotland is 8.2.
- In 2006 and 2007 data for Dundee City was not provided. The data supplied for 2005 has been used as this was the most recent available.
- Data for Eilean Siar was not available for 2007. The data supplied for 2006 has been used.
- In the October 2006 census, there was a change in methodology to eliminate the double counting of staff covering for absent staff. Therefore, 2006 figures are not comparable with previous years.
- In 2007, Glasgow provided figures for homecare staff for the first time. Therefore, totals for 2007 are not comparable with previous years. For comparisons with previous years, the WTE for 2007 excluding Glasgow's home care is 41,850 and the number of staff per 1,000 population in Scotland is 8.2.
